As Will rides into the horizon on his “new” car and Sean disappears to away lands the viewer can finally understand the genius of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. Just by reading the name of the movie (Good Will Hunting) one knows that everything in the movie happens and for a reason and there is no coincidence in our world, and that is precisely when we realize at the end of the film. It is as if the two young college students (at the time they wrote it) wanted to find a way to knit the whole story closely together and they did so by making the two main characters go away.
As Will drives away from his friends and what has been his comfort zone, towards the other coast of the USA in a red trashed down car we understand that he has finally matured. The broken down car represents the lack of uncertainty one has when taking risks as you cannot predict what the outcome will be. You just hope it will work out to plan because that is what you want, not what has been made out for you. On the other hand, Sean represents the fear of leaving your comfort zone due to being light. After his wife had passed away, he stayed in a state of trance that prevents him from challenging himself, and instead, he collapses in his world shutting out whatever might challenge him. That is why when he tells Will: “I do not know how to practice it, I just teach it” he sounds like such a hypocrite. Sean is asking Will not to be the person he has become yet; he is too afraid to do what he is requesting it to do. This is done to showcase how a person depends on a soulmate to grow on a day-to-day basis.
A soulmate is someone who pushes you to be better each day as they take us to levels that we would never even imagine of reaching. At the start beginning of the movie Chuck is there for Will but he is everything but a soulmate. You can see him and the rest of Will’s friends as people who are pushing him back instead of helping him grow. Nevertheless, when Chuck tells Will: “If you do not leave I will kill you” we can finally see how he has matured and isn't thinking about himself but instead wanting to push his friend to be the best he can be. No, it does not mean that he wants Will to go and make money. He is instead telling him to get away from the shithole where they live because the only thing he will gain from that is staying in a circle of lightness that will lead to nothing productive in life. That is why when the day after he goes to Will’s house and doesn't find him he just lets out a smile as he knows that his friend no matter where has finally understood he has to get away from their lifestyle and go to a good life. However, what is remarkable with Will is that he does not stop at following his friends advice he instead pushes Sean to break out of his comfort zone and too and finally let go of the pain of his wife’s death.
In other words, Affleck and Damon make both Sean and Will leave Boston behind, to show how a soulmate can push you to become a good person and lose the fear of taking risks. A soulmate will be the one who makes you overtake your fears and make you beat them. When Will leaves everything behind “to see about a girl” it does not represent leaving the world you know for a girl. The complete opposite it represents Will’s will to overcome his fear of loving someone due to the fear of rejection. The same with Sean. When he leaves for India and China, it does not represent a simple trip but his desire to overcome the passing away of his late wife and getting back on the saddle. Precisely the message of both characters wheeling away.
