I skimmed across the floor in my white button up shirt tucked up in my caqui pants. As I ran from dinner hall to kitchen numbers and words spun around my head, I touched my left pocket and felt all the orders given to me by the waiters. As I tried to remember what to say to the cook I had to balance the tray with empty plates and half full glasses, “this is really hard”, I thought to myself. How many times had I seen waiters do this and think it was the easiest job in the world? The first few orders went by without a problem but as more guests gathered upon for dinner and orders came by quicker and quicker confusion arose. Orders got messed up and the manager gave us the “runners” a stare. My second job during my mini internship was working with food and beverages and it was the most fun part of the job. Food has always been a passion of mine so to be able to learn how the restaurant works in a hotel was really nice as I could now understand how waiters feel after customers shout when they mess up orders. This also taught me how to behave towards staff and more importantly how to treat them. Thirty minutes before writing this entry I had messed up an order of 18 pisco sours and had to do the “walk of shame”, as the staff call it. The “walk of shame” consists of going to each table and verifying the order. This was something that left various tourists unimpressed. As I verified the orders guests decided to give me a hard time on my mistake and as much as I wanted to say something back I knew I couldn’t, I was part of the staff and had to behave like one.
Due to personal reasons my internship had to be cut short to six days instead of the 12 planned but nevertheless, I have learned very important lessons both on how a business works, in this case a hotel and how the staff should behave. This will allow me to choose a career that suits me perfect and not just choosing it because it sounds cool. Obviously I am no expert after just six days working but I am more experienced and knowledgeable than before and that was precisely what I was looking for with this internship. I wanted to learn the basic aspects of the hospitality and then as time goes by and I become more experience be able to see it from a more important perspective. Only time and experience will allow me to achieve my goals but I believe I have started well.
