School had begun to change.
Those days were school seemed like an obligation instead of something I enjoyed doing were now behind me.
The first day of Iweek made me become a 6th grader all over again. As the group got together you could feel the emotion and the energy flowing around the class, each student was like a bomb ready to explode.
We were all excited and ready to begin. The emotion generated from having the chance of helping 6th graders with their transitions to secondary school was clouding our minds. The passion every one of us was feeling as problems were discussed and solutions thought off were greater than anything I had ever experienced.
None of us were really thinking, we just wanted to go out and work. Never before in my 13 years of being a student at FDR had I felt this way. Usually the first week of school was horrible and I just wanted to be back home but not this time.
This was great and I never wanted to let go.
I decided this was going to be my chance to further enhance my leadership qualities and take responsibility of the group. I became project manager and had the task of keeping the whole group on task.
This made the situation even worse.
Instead of focusing on keeping people on task and making the project move smoothly I tried to go to everyone and participate, making me interfere with their work. This caused others not to respect their roles and chaos arose.
Nevertheless, I felt as if I was a young kid eager to learn and ready to go to school. I was full of emotion because I knew I had the chance to shape my own education instead of just reading textbooks for hours and getting bored. This was the first time in a long time were I actually enjoyed school.
This was due to the fact, that the Innovation Academy isn’t a traditional learning program, but the complete opposite.
Instead of learning inside the class and teachers explaining we now had the chance of going around school and actually having hands on experience.
