The phone started to ring and with each ring of the phone my heartbeat accelerated. My first day as a salesman was starting.
After two weeks talking about marketing and learning what it was all about I was finally putting it into practice.
I dialed the phone and the assistant manager of “Los 3 Chanchos” answered. I had practiced what I was going to say hundreds of times but when I heard Mr. Luis Mosca’s voice I was completely frozen.
A thousand thoughts went through my mind and none of them had anything to do with YAQUA. As the clock kept ticking I finally got myself together and could say a few words.
I introduced myself and explained what our project was about.
Mr. Mosca said he had no idea what YAQUA was; so I gave him a brief explanation, but as I explained to him the mission of YAQUA I couldn’t contain my laughter.
His last name means fly after all.
After explaining what YAQUA is I realized his tone of voice completely changed and he was much more convinced about me that he had been at the beginning. His voice changed from wanting to hang up on me because of my nervousness to being really helpful.
We kept talking for five minutes until he told me that the general manager arrived on Tuesday and that we should call him then. As soon as I hanged up the phone I felt my whole body shiver and a few drops of sweat rolling on my forehead.
This had been my first real “test" and I had succeeded. I had actually called the assistant manager of a market and tried to sell him a product and didn’t get hanged up…
I was enjoying the moment.
I instantly remembered “ To Sell Is Human” and imagined myself as one of the Fuller Brushman's, I saw myself walking into the store and convincing them that they needed to start selling YAQUA bottle.
If this were the type of “tests” I would be facing everyday I was ready and more than willing to do it. I am just 16 years old and I am actually doing work and applying what I learn not just the theory of marketing.
Talking about changing the way we look at education; boy have we achieved that in the IA.
I am now a real salesman.
