Never in my life had I thought that I would say that.
For me, writing had always been an obligation and not something that I enjoyed doing; it had always been an assignment and not something I chose.
When “The Break” was introduced to us, I was skeptical at first because of my apprehension for writing, but once I realized the impact one could create writing for an actual newspaper, I was excited.
As I read the book, “To Sell is Human” by Daniel H. Pink, I came up with a very interesting thought that I can perfectly relate to what I am looking to achieve with my publications in “The Break”
“To sell is to persuade others”
When most people hear the word "sell", they automatically think about products and consumers; but they don’t think about the actual meaning of selling and how it shapes our daily lives.
When you "sell" something it means that you are persuading others into believing what you think. Even though we are not aware, this is what every company aims to achieve when selling their products.
Writing as a passion is precisely that, expressing your feelings and emotions through text. Thus, persuading the reader to think as you and trying to make him believe in your ideas. Writing is selling your thoughts to the reader.
Indirectly, as a newspaper writer I am working as a sales person even if it doesn’t feel like it. I am portraying what I think and what my opinion is, while trying to change the way the reader thinks.
This is precisely what a salesperson does, he exhibits merchandise and convinces consumers that they need your product.
Although I am not selling a material product, I am selling a thought hoping that the reader will be persuaded and buys into it.
As this new adventure as a passionate writer unfolds, I will also embark on my newly discovered profession as a salesman…
After all, aren’t we all salespersons?
Think about it…
